Numa, New Ancient Materials, is the project which, for a number of years, under the guidance of Roberto Zani, has been working on rereading materials of the tradition using modern-day languages of expression, producing small series and objects of design in limited editions.
The history of Numa began in 1999 with Metallia, a collection of objects in pewter by a number of authors, continuing in 2001 with the first limited edition series named Just for Flowers, six vases in pewter designed by Ettore Sottsass.
Over the following years, the Numa project extended its research to include other materials of the tradition, worked wood and Murano glass, from which three new limited edition collections were born: Custodie by Giuseppe Rivadossi in 2003 and Tavole e Scatole Segrete by Ettore Sottsass in 2004.
In 2006, the Numa project undertook a new research path, the result of its encounter with poetry, architecture and philosophy. Together with the accomplishment of an outstanding collection of vases in pewter designed by Mario Botta, Numa proposed two themes of literary reflection to two illustrious personalities of Italian culture, the poet Mario Luzi and the philosopher Remo Bodei.
From the collaboration with Ettore Sottsass the ‘La cucina sapiente e la tavola contenta’ was created in 2004, a full organic range of utensils for the kitchen and table, of which some were rewarded with the prestigious prize that is the Red Dot Design Award 2007
